If you need help right now

The National Problem Gambling Helpline is free, confidential and staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

What this site is, and what it isn't

Inside the Number publishes analysis of betting markets. We do not take bets, hold funds, or process wagers of any kind. Nothing here is a promise that a bet will win, and no one should treat it as one.

You must be 21 or older to bet legally in most US states, and 18 or older in a handful. Sports betting is not legal everywhere. Knowing the law where you live is your responsibility.

The math, stated plainly

We would rather tell you this than have you work it out the expensive way. A standard two-sided market prices both sides at about -110. That means you risk $110 to win $100, and you need to be right 52.4% of the time simply to break even.

Bet a genuine coin flip a thousand times at that price and you will be right almost exactly five hundred times — and you will still be down about $5,000. Not because you were unlucky. Because of what the book keeps.

The overwhelming majority of sports bettors lose money over time. That is not a warning attached for form's sake; it is the arithmetic of the product. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

If several of these sound familiar, that is worth talking to someone about. The helpline above exists for exactly this conversation, and calling it does not commit you to anything.

Practical things that help

Self-exclusion

Every state with legal sports betting operates a self-exclusion programme that blocks you from licensed operators for a fixed period or permanently. You can also self-exclude with an individual sportsbook directly through your account. Your state gaming commission's website is the place to start.

For friends and family

If you are worried about someone else, the same helpline takes those calls. Gam-Anon runs support groups specifically for the families of problem gamblers.

Our position

We publish market analysis because we find it genuinely interesting and because most betting content is dishonest about the odds. If anything on this site ever contributes to somebody getting hurt, we have failed at the thing we set out to do. Please use the numbers above if you need them.
